Independent floors are a good idea and sometimes a requirement when creating loft storage space. We often adopt the method shown above, here you can see the new timber joists have been installed and rest completely independent of the existing ceiling joists. This procedure ensures there will be no weight what so ever applied to the existing ceiling joists, which means no cracks to the plaster below ! This method is mainly used when existing ceiling joists are to thin to support excess weight or when we are creating a hobby or study area.
